From Royal Stables to MuseumsQuartier: Fischer von Erlach’s HofQuartier

The famous baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach designed today's MuseumsQuartier as imperial stables for around 600 horses and 200 carriages. The tour gives you a new perspective on the former city of horses. Following in the footsteps of the noble Lippizaner and Kladruber horses, we take a look at horses and horsemanship in the Baroque period, carriage travelling and courtly life and work. Discover the development of an architectural jewel over the course of 300 years.

The Imperial KaiserQuartier: A Habsburg Vision

Knights & revolutionaries, hens & heroes, treasures & collections – follow imperial footsteps on the KaiserQuartier Tour and discover more about Franz Joseph’s vision for anImperial Forum city plan. As the former court stables, the MuseumsQuartier, together with Maria-Theresien-Platz, Heldenplatz and the Hofburg, is one of the city's most important historic architectural ensembles. In the Ringstrasse era, the architects Gottfried Semper and Carl Hasenauer sought to achieve a continuity between these sites. The Imperial Forum reveals Vienna's eventful history and lets you step back into 19th century.

Since 2002, the Artist-in-Residence program has enabled around 60 international artists to live and work directly in the MuseumsQuartier every year.
In an inspiring collaboration with our partners, the artists are not only given space for creative development, but also the opportunity to explore the unique diversity of the Austrian art and culture scene. The artists are not just guests - they are driving forces who enrich the artistic scene in the Austrian capital with their international perspectives.
Be there when art and culture meet, when cross-border creativity meets local traditions. Discover the stories behind their artistic works, exchange ideas and be enchanted by the energy of the international art scene.
