This presentation at the Leopold Museum is the first to showcase a compilation of select works from the generous donation, comprising some 350 artworks, gifted by the former gallery owner, publisher and art collector Helmut Klewan who, over five decades, compiled a comprehensive collection of writers’ portraits created using various media but primarily as works on paper.

Franz Hagenauer (1906–1986) created an extensive oeuvre characterized by a tension-filled synthesis of sculpture and refined arts and crafts. Based on the human body and on shapes derived from the flora and fauna, Hagenauer went through all the modes of expression, influenced in phases by Neo-Classicism, the Bauhaus movement, Art Deco and the topoi of popular culture.

This exhibition contributes to the exploration of professional photography in the 19th century. Using the example of the photographic publishing house Otto Schmidt, the presentation examines the insoluble connection between esthetics, economy, image consumption and social parameters.

Whether image, sound or sacred music – the Canadian artist Félix­Antoine Morin is guided in his work by the aesthetic principle of poetic translation and plays with reality by shifting it into fiction and abstraction.

Authenticity and a direct connection with life are significant factors in the performances of one of Canada’s most notable contem­porary choreographers, Benoît Lachambre. And what could be more genuine than actual cathartic experiences? Together with artist and musician Félix­-Antoine Morin, Lachambre goes in search of the ‘spiritual truth in creating art’ in this piece.

For two years, in 2020 and 2021, chore­ographers and dancers were invited by the Creative Europe project Life Long Burning to share resources, working processes and artistic practices with the network’s partner organizations and to develop new pieces.
