Exhibition: Toourism

Exhibition: Toourism

How can we rethink tourism in an era of climate crisis, wars, the threat of further pandemics, a shortage of skilled labour and an ongoing energy crisis, and steer it in a more sustainable direction? What is the role that spatial planning and architecture are playing in this? The exhibition sheds light on key aspects of tourism, such as mobility, city tourism, interdependencies with agriculture, climate change, the privatisation of natural beauty and the change in accomodation typologies, and explores the question of whether and how tourism development is planned. Above all, however, the exhibition looks at the potential for transformation.

We take a look at some of the projects in the permanent collection at the Architekturzentrum Wien and then set off in search of green oases in Vienna by underground and on foot.

Guided tour in dialogue: Toourism with photographer Lois Hechenblaikner

Hechenblaikner gives a guided tour of the exhibition "Toourism" in a conversation with an Az W guide, while referencing his archive of photographs of contemporary Alpine tourism: an expansive, romantic rural Alpine setting for an après-ski culture that has distorted tradition beyond recognition while also leaving scars in the landscape. It is time to think about a new kind of tourism.

Panel discussion: After the Lack of Snow is Before the Heatwave

Panel discussion: After the Lack of Snow is Before the Heatwave

Every year the excitement over the country's “white strips of snow” ramps up in the media. Last year a satirical broadcast on the "Lake Neusiedl Desert" caused a wave of cancellations there. Tourism and climate change are two controversial topics everybody is talking about.
