Public Moves: Composing Lightness – Axis Syllabus
with Kira Kirsch
Thu 17.07., 18.45h l MQ Forecourt l Free entry
In her pedagogical work, Kira celebrates learning through movement and dance, creating spaces where participants actively research and explore the body in motion, cultivating the value of collaborative dance practice. This class will explore the spring-like action of fascia in both human and animal movement, enhancing our understanding of shock absorption, energy storage, and wave-like coordination. We skip, we dance, we fly!
Public Moves dance classes take place outdoors every day – international and local instructors share their knowledge of everything from jazz and Bollywood dance to waacking in free outdoor classes. No previous experience is necessary, and all ages and levels are welcome!
Registration begins one day before the course starts at 11:00 a.m. via the calendar or by telephone on +43.1.523 55 58-19. If a class is ‘fully booked’, there is still the possibility of securing a remaining place on site. It's worth dropping by!
Biography
Kira Kirsch is a movement artist, community organiser, experiential researcher, mother, and initiator/curator born in East Berlin. After spending seven years in San Francisco and a period of nomadic living, she now works and lives with her family at Lake Studios in Berlin – an artist-run space for dance, production, and performance.
Kira is deeply committed to creating and shaping spaces where people can experience, learn about, and sensitise their mind-body-movement continuum. She has pioneered, taught, and continuously researched through the lens of the Axis Syllabus (AS) for over 20 years, establishing dance research communities in Brussels, San Francisco, and Berlin. Her work is also profoundly influenced by her studies in Moving Alchemy (Sarah Shelton Mann), Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, Mind in Motion (Nita Little), NVC (Nonviolent Communication), and BMC (Body-Mind Centering).
As a curator, she collaborated on the SENSING IN festival (Berlin), on “mo*ved” – a peer exchange platform for movement educators – and has established a regular educational programme under the name Movement Artisans in Berlin. Kira is invited internationally to both contemporary and CI (Contact Improvisation) festivals, and teaches at professional dance institutions. At irregular intervals, she becomes involved in diverse artistic collaborations, including dance films, music videos, and installations. Since 2019, Kira has hosted the Berlin Co-Lab, a group of CI dancers that continues to research somatic communication in CI and ensemble improvisation.
