Steve Ince
freelance writer and game designer, Manchester UK

With new technology appearing almost as quickly as we can blink and already such a major part of our everyday lives, how does it affect storytelling and the stories we embrace?  Looking from both the perspective of the creators and the consumers, Steve Ince considers both traditional and new media and their changing roles in these very exciting times.
From film and books to games and transmedia, the consumer is bombarded with a wealth of entertainment constantly, affecting not only the creation and delivery of the stories we tell but also the marketing changes required to reach and keep an important consumer audience.
People thrive on stories from all walks of life and storytelling has become almost ingrained within us.  Can we still thrive with stories that break convention so regularly with no specific protagonist, a protagonist we never see or multiple endings?  Will we still get the rich quality from stories that take new approaches to structure, drama, character dynamics and delivery methods by offering short downloadable episodes, an abandonment of act structure and an emphasis on player agency?
Not all games need a strong story, but for those that do, some have story structures that echo those found in other media – film, novels, TV – while others, particularly more open games, have a need to define new structures.  Whatever structure developers choose for their games, interweaving the narrative with interactivity and gameplay is vital to give the player the best experience possible.

Short Biographies:

Steve Ince

Steve is an award-nominated freelance writer and game designer with nineteen years of game development experience. He hasa speciality in story and character driven games and interactive narrative.
His time with Revolution Software began in the role of artist and sprite animator but eighteen months later he was promoted to producer for the first two “Broken Sword” games among others. He later moved into the writing and design side of game development and was co-writer and lead designer on the third in the “Broken Sword” series for which he received the first of his writing award nominations.
He left Revolution in 2004 to turn freelance and has worked with numerous clients on a variety of projects, from casual titles to humorous games to dark and violent fantasy.
In 2006 he wrote a book, “Writing for Video Games” (published by A&C Black), and created his own game “Mr. Smoozles Goes Nutso” (based on his online comic strip) for which he wrote the story, designed the gameplay, created the graphics and implemented the game.
His next big project involved writing and designing the game “So Blonde” for French company Wizarbox.  This game gave him his second writing award nomination, this time at the prestigious “Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards” of 2008.
He´s been a speaker at a number of conferences over the last few years as well as being invited to give guest lectures at colleges and universities.

Andrea Schmoll
Andy is a video game designer with 8 years of experience and a passion for storytelling in games. From AAA to indie, from serious games to banned ones, from mobile devices to MMOs - she has created games for a wide range of genres and platforms.
She believes that games can tell all kinds of stories and evoke all sorts of feelings. When she thinks of designing games, she also thinks of the stories she’d like to tell. That's why she co-organized the STAG Conference in 2011 - to bring others together who share her passion for storytelling in, with and through games.
When she's not making games, she tries to help and support aspiring game developers, attends game jams and writes game development-related articles.

Ines Häufler
Ines Häufler was born in Salzburg in 1974. After studying journalism and German philology, she worked for several theaters in Austria and Germany. Since 2003 she has been working as a script consultant and lives in Vienna.
