Wien Modern \"Notation\"
Notation: the intention of noting down a musical idea»

Date: Oct 31 - Nov 14
Venue: Kunsthalle Wien

The exhibition takes as its theme a quest which was to become significant for music in the 20th century: the search for innovative notation systems to match the ever-changing and constantly developing conceptions of sound and form. As a result there emerged very different types of notation using whole new catalogues of signs, pictures, graphics or verbal instructions, some of which can be seen in the exhibits. The exhibition spans an arch from Schönberg to the current day and highlights both the limits and possibilities of notation in music. Central to the exhibition are the «Notation Artworks» of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati.

Curator: Susana Zapke

A cooperation between the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and Wien Modern.
