Wiener Festwochen 2010: Out of Context - for Pina
Alain Platel / les ballets C de la B\r\n

Date: 06 jun to 09 jun, 20:30
Venue: HALLE E+G / Halle G

Acting and Dance Performance / Brussels / Austrian Premiere

Choreographer Alain Platel\'s new work focuses on the body in a state of ecstasy and hysteria. In an intimate setting, eight dancers explore hysteria not as a disorder but, says Platel, \"an expression of hypersensitivity for the immensity of life\'\'.

The body in a condition of hysteria and ecstasy is a leitmotif of increasing importance in the work of Flemish director and choreographer Alain Platel. Hysteria and its expression are the central themes of a new project with nine dancers that focuses on the history of the social body. This is a project that makes do without any luxuries, sets, instrumentalists or narrative framework. The artist does not view hysteria as illness or disturbed behaviour but rather as hypersensitivity vis-à-vis the excessive demands made by life. Seeing a body in a state of ecstasy or hysteria triggers anxiety. For this reason, Platel and his dancers in this project search for ways of reinforcing intimacy between artist and audience and to mitigate the fear of what is presented. The project proposes a step in an entirely new direction for Alain Platel and in fact stands outside the context the artist has become known for.

With his company les ballets C de la B, Alain Platel is considered one of Europe\'s leading choreographers of the past 15 years. Most of his celebrated works have been shown at Vienna\'s TanzQuartier. This is his first participation at Wiener Festwochen.
