Writer-in-Residence Muharem Bazdulj in conversation with Mascha Dabic

The Bosnian writer, translator and journalist Muharem Bazdulj, who has been invited as Writer-in-Residence by the BMEIA to MuseumsQuartier for September and October, talks about his works, his new novel and his residency here in Vienna. The Bosnian translator and writer Mascha Dabic will translate into German.

Muharem Bazdulj was born 1977 in Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Journalist (Oslobodjenje), translator (Paul Auster, W. B. Yeats), writer.

Muharem Bazdulj published several novels and short story collections, including Druga knjiga (2000), which was awarded “The Book of the Year” prize by Open Society Bosnia and Herzegovina and translated into English and published as The Second Book in 2005 by Northwestern University Press in their prestigious series Writings from an Unbound Europe. His novel Byron and the Beauty was published in English in London in 2016 by Istros Books and was selected among 40 best books published that year in English by Irish Times. Muharem Bazdulj´s short stories and essays have appeared in World Literature Today, Creative Nonfiction, Habitus, and Absinthe, among other literary reviews. Two of his early novels are available in German: Der Ungläubige und Zulejha (2008) and Transit.Komet.Eklipse (2011). Both are translated by Klaus Detlef Olof and published by Seifert Verlag (Wien).

Mascha Dabić, born in Sarajevo in 1981, translates literature from the Balkans, including texts by Barbi Markovic. Graduated in Translation Studies (English and Russian). Lives in Vienna and has done work on the phenomenon of migration as a journalist for the Vienna daily newspaper Der Standard; works as an interpreter for conferences and in connection with asylum seekers; teaches at the universities of Innsbruck and Vienna. For her debut novel Reibungsverluste she has been nominated for the Franz-Tumler-literature price and has been listed on the shortlist debut of the Österreichischen Buchpreis 2017.
