Nikola Knežević

I will be involved in an exhibition, researching 50 years of contract signed between Yugoslavia and Austria. This contract allowed guest workers to come legally to Austria.
As an intervention into architectural practice, my work is interdisciplinary practice and research based, focused on the body, spatial politics and corporate architectural styles. Using research as a basis for each work I don’t seek to indicate from where the certain space comes from, nor even how it is constructed, but how it is unmade, how it explodes, disseminates. I describe my work as „melodramatic architecture“ - unveiling of personal and historical narratives hidden behind the mere appearances of physical structures. Based on research of architectural forms that are part of GASTARBEIT phenomenon, I will shape an installation that mixes several mediums – text, CGI animation and physical objects. On the one hand, I am interested to do the research on communal buildings, existing and non-existing, where the guest workers spend their leisure time, and on the other, I would like to focus on those spaces from which the guest-workers are excluded. This project would be continuation of my experimenting with private and public spaces of participation and collective memory. My personal experience of struggle as once being an immigrant will be deeply embedded into the narrative. Since my work is quite research driven, I do take space for changes and adjustments during my stay.
