Project Proposal
quartier21 Vienna

A growing debate over multiculturalism, changing demographics and political activism that has resulted in diverse communities lobbying for representation have prompted the artists to examine their artistic topics and their value systems. To address these contemporary concerns I will try to focus on the activities that will extend my knowledge and experiences and lead me to the reconsideration of the artist’s role in both recording and shaping perceptions of personal identities and social realm.

The main objective of my visit will be the exploration of the galleries, art institutions, philosophy and artistic community in Vienna. My intention is to make an art scene “expertise” with the potential to contribute to local and international context.

I would like to identify innovative currents of creative and critical thinking in order to develop new projects and collaborative partnerships. These projects will vary from exhibitions to publishing and educational activities. The residency should thus become a social platform as a forum for social interaction among me and professionals from different countries, disciplines and generation.

The purpose of my Vienna fellowship will be to research material for my new projects, to realize new ideas, to gain more confidence in my artistry expressions and to meet cross-cultural challenges successfully. The residency will allow me to enrich my knowledge through interaction with professional and international counterparts. The opportunity to interact face-to-face with local visual artists, critics, curators and theorists will allow me to establish learning and creative relationships.

Most of my projects are making the receiver’s expectations and prejudices one of the principal subjects of the work. For my new project I am pplanning to confront the viewer with situations that can potentially change her/his perception of her/his cultural and social reality, and make her/him question her/his perceptual habits and thought patterns. I am in search of innovative, critical and radical approaches to diverse art practices and organization focused on how to produce art unbound by market, commerce, and whitecubes.

I am looking for a wide range of perspectives, essays, case studies, artworks and interviews to articulate and promote the idea of self generative cultural events and the collective production of art. I wish to keep the possible topics vague enough for interpretation. However, here are the main themes I am working with and the subjects of my artistic research: ethos, history and politics of art and culture, culture jamming, guerrilla art practices, strategies of audience engagement, question of authorship/ownership in collaborative systems.

Anetta Mona Chisa - Artist-in-residence at MQ Wien – quartier21
March-April 2006

The MQ residency program provided me with many opportunities to observe Austrian life and society but also city's artistic scene and activities in my fields of interest.

Being in contact with all the institutions from Quartier21 allowed me to enrich my knowledge through interaction with professional from Vienna but also from all over the world. During my residency I have attended presentations and meetings within MQ but also outside of it.

Getting to know the works of some local artists and art professionals and also exchanging information and ideas was a very interesting thing for me.

The main objective of my stay was the exploration of artistic community and life in Vienna. I was trying to make a scene "expertise" with the potential to contribute to the local but also international context.

My research extended on broader cultural experiences (from visiting galleries, museums and presenting my work, discussing with artists and art professionals to simply exploring the life and atmosphere of the city) in order to fulfill my vivid curiosity and desire to meet the Austrian culture. Part of this research inspired me to extend some of my previous projects to another dimension.

Thus I especially designed some works and presentations for events like Viennartfair, FAQ screening (MQ Ovalhalle), ABK Wien lecture, What Went Wrong show within Multiplace Festival (Semper Depot), the exhibition Innen Ansicht (Kunstraum Noe) and others.

The resources of the residency consisted not only in learning and creating new ideas and projects, but also in preparing a continuing dialogue between Vienna based and Slovak art professionals.

I successfully met interesting people and I made friendships that will surely lead to further collaborations and activities.
