Workshop for Adults: reading images. Colonial Traces – What We (Don’t) See in Art
Di 24.03. & Do 30.04., 17h, in German
The interactive photomontage workshop with an exhibition visit explores why common world maps show distorted proportions and why Western artists were not only inspired by the Global South.
By creating photomontages and during the interactive exhibition visit, participants question their own ways of seeing and discover how images can distort or obscure realities.
The works of Lisl Ponger in the exhibition "Die Welt von Morgen wird eine weitere Gegenwart gewesen sein" make (post)colonial power relations between Europe and the Global South visible. Using her artworks and artistic approaches as a starting point, the workshop investigates how art reveals traces of cultural appropriation and the theft of cultural property—and why these have long gone unnoticed.
In the workshop, and in reference to Ponger’s artistic practice, participants use personal photos* of belongings (objects), which are then combined with artworks using photomontage techniques.
At the end, participants share the stories of their objects. In dialogue, they discuss the line between visible and hidden meanings.
