Tino Sehgal’s "This Variation" is a choreographic masterpiece that rocked the dOCUMENTA (13) at its premiere in 2012. Called “addictive” by The Guardian, it left visitors “breathless and overwhelmed” and continues to do so. For the first time now in Vienna, this intriguing work takes shape in the shared space of a dark room. Immersed in sound, visitors are guided by shifting energetic intensities as dancers appear, recede, and reorganize. There is no stage, no objects, and no single viewpoint – only an unfolding choreography made to be experienced from within. Moving between intimacy and intensity, using rhythm, proximity, voice, and speech, "This Variation" builds a world that, like the biological world, repeats form with infinite variation. The work is less something to watch than something to enter. Here, one’s own attention and presence influence the flow and dynamic of a dance that is at once formally organized and yet porous and responsive.
