A Ritual of The Living Trees was inspired by the women of Kampung Enggros, guardians of the mangrove forest on Papua Island, Indonesia. Spending their days gathering shellfish, laughing, sharing worries, and singing among the trees, they are deeply connected to a forest slowly disappearing due to expanding infrastructure and tourism.
For MQ Artist in Residence Yola Yulfianti, the planting of new trees in MuseumsQuartier courtyard echoed these memories, calling for a welcoming ritual. Performed with the artists of the Translocal Performative Academy, and joined remotely by Elisabeth Monica Rumbiak from Kampung Enggros, singing the traditional songs usually performed in the women’s forest, the performance becomes a gesture of gratitude and recognition for the trees that will continue to live alongside us, becoming part of our everyday presence, breath, and shared landscape.
