Bees, flower meadows and forests are probably the first images that pop into most people's heads when they hear the word biodiversity. Hardly anyone thinks of cities, densely populated residential areas and asphalted roads - but wrongly so. Because although cities and a diversity of flora and fauna do not seem to go together at first glance, urban spaces offer a wide range of potential uses. What needs to be done in a city so that insects, birds, mammals, shrubs and trees feel at home there? Where are Austrian cities lagging behind and in which areas are they already pioneers?
STANDARD editors Alicia Prager and Julia Beirer discuss biodiversity in the city with biodiversity researcher Franz Essl and MuseumsQuartier Wien Director Bettina Leidl.
