The Sigmund Freud Museum, a multi-layered cultural location in Vienna, was awarded the Client's Prize and nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award.

For almost 50 years, the house at 19 Berggasse, built in 1890, was Sigmund Freud’s home and where he had his practice. From 1938 onwards, it housed shared apartments and a Nazi deportation centre. Anna Freud, whose consulting rooms were next to those of her father from 1923 to 1938, initiated a museum and centre for the study of psychoanalysis here in 1971. The redesign by Hermann Czech, ARTEC Architects and Walter Angonese, under the curatorial direction of Monika Pessler and Daniela Finzi, reveals the aura of the location itself while taking a distance from any reconstruction and creating a present-day place. The conversion opens the museum up to the urban setting around Berggasse/Porzellangasse, which owes its metropolitan substance to the culture that Freud represents.
