DANCE/PERFORMANCE/MUSIC

New Opera Vienna: Eurydike – The Blind Lovers
16. to 22.10., Hall E, Austrian premiere
Music: Manfred Trojahn
Libretto: Manfred Trojahn, based on three poems by Rainer Maria Rilke from "Sonnets to Orpheus"
In his opera Eurydice – The Blind Lovers, which premiered in 2021, Manfred Trojahn tackles a timeless theme: the question of whether love can overcome death. The work is presented as a psychological drama that draws musically from the broad repertoire of contemporary tonality and transports the audience into a world full of sensuality, expressiveness and diversity of form. Eurydice is an actress who begins a fateful affair with Pluto, the god of the underworld. On her journey to him, she meets the young musician Orpheus and falls in love with him. An intense relationship develops between the two. However, Pluto remains omnipresent and Eurydice's fate seems sealed. Nevertheless, Eurydice and Orphée manage to see each other again – with an uncertain outcome.
German composer, conductor and essayist Manfred Trojahn (born 1949) has earned himself a permanent place in contemporary music theatre with his outstanding operas. With its sophisticated musical structure and decidedly narrative elements, Trojahn's music becomes a living mouthpiece for the characters and their feelings.
