Curator’s Tour: GUSTAVE COURBET. Realist and Rebel

Thu 12.03., 16.30h, with Hans-Peter Wipplinger, Director of the Leopold Museum, in German

Gustave Courbet, the most important representative of Realism, radically questioned the idealized conventions of the 19th century and combined artistic revolution with social commitment. As a self-confident provocateur and politically aware observer, he also created powerful images of a quiet, contemplative world in portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. The major retrospective at the Leopold Museum – the first solo exhibition on Courbet in Austria – brings together works from all phases of his career and leads from early self-portraits to socially critical key works and sensual nudes, as well as landscapes from Ornans, powerful seascapes, and works from his Swiss exile.

Guided tour fee: € 5 (plus ticket)
