Sounds On The Move

Once again, the impressive main courtyard of the Museumsquartier and its passages of micro-museums provides the setting for contemporary music and Sound Art, concert installations and performances.

Following a series of major open-air concerts with musicians and sound artists such as Hans Platzgumer, dieb13 and Tetsua Umeda in 2009 and Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson, BJNilsen, Burkhard Stangl and Christian Fennesz in 2010, as well as expansive sound installations, such as Andres Bosshard's Klanghimmel MQ in 2011, and celebrated performance acts, such as Benoît Maubrey’s AUDIO BALLERINAS 2012, or the presentation of generative and electroacoustic music from British and Canadian music archives in 2013 and 2014, now Sounds On The Move — the TONSPUR_live_open_air_interventions_2019 — features world premieres by young international composers from the composition class at the Kunstuniversität Graz, conducted by two of the most renowned composers of our time: Beat Furrer and Bernhard Lang.

Guests of the MQ from near and far, who now mostly stroll with open ears, can expect a singular sound event that bundles the whole palette of contemporary composition and sound artistry into one moving performance lasting over three hours . ‘Moving’ in both senses of the word, for guests and passers-by are invited to follow the composers and musicians to the locations chosen for their (first) performances in the courtyards of the MQ. So, let’s move around, following the sounds and the music of: Guy Ben-Tov, Ármin Cservenák, Sehyung Kim, Sinan Samanli und Milica Vujadinović.

The Composition Class at the KUG

Soon after I began being a mentor to the students in autumn 2018, I had the idea of bringing the group from the university biotope into public music and art life, in the form of a large-scale project to be held at a location I have a very personal connection with, above all through my work in the Tanzquartier Wien but also through upcoming music theatre projects.

My students’ works are beautiful in their diversity and in the different approaches they take, and perhaps show the emergence of a new generation of composers with surprising characters. This was made possible by the hospitality and openness of TONSPUR and Georg Weckwerth, to whom I should like to express my sincere thanks.

–Bernhard Lang (Professor of Composition // Kunstuniversität Graz)
