Monika Meister (A): On Laughter. Structures of the comical and the performative in absurd theatre

Laughter as a physical process corresponds in many ways with the tragic-comical constellations of Samuel Beckett\'s theatre. The comic moments which break up the tragical narrative are fundamentally important in the scenic presence of the characters\' loss of identity and homelessnes. Theoretical reflections on the comical and the absurd are elaborated with regard to performance. The focus is directed towards the microstructures of language and movement, of silence and standstill, towards those tilting moments where laughter comes into being.
The lecture corresponds with the premiere of Oleg Soulimenko\'s piece.

Monika Meister is professor of theatre studies at the Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Sciences of the University of Vienna.
