Can we speak openly about issues such as religion, multiculturalism or racism? How do ideas and opinions manifest themselves, how do our visible and hidden censorship mechanisms take hold? Since its foundation in 1986, the DV8 Physical Theatre has been legendary for its socially committed and physically gripping works. In their new production at the intersection of dance, theatre and documentary, the company addresses the \"taboos\" of our democracies and the preconditions and challenges of life in a society that is determined by the multitude and parallels of its cultures and religious orientations.
From the 1989 book burnings of Salman Rushdies\'s The Satanic Verses, to the murder of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh and the controversy of the \"Muhammad cartoons\" in 2005, DV8\'s production will examine how these events have reflected and influenced multicultural policies, press freedom and artistic censorship.
Can We Talk About This? makes direct use of archive material and interviews conducted by DV8 with leading figures from across the religious, political, cultural and social spectrum. When bodies extend words, movement counters so far unquestioned images and the complexity of language starts to shake the prefabricated, then an artistic room for discussion of impressive directness develops.
