Project info

blackmilk will be presented at ImPulsTanz, it is the first part of the trompoppies trilogy.
"Trompoppies" is Afrikaans and describes drum majorettes performing a formation dance in uniform.
The performance examines one of the choreographic elements of these dances: the precise hand gestures. Fusing trompoppies movements with the melodramatic gestures of white female starlets and gestures associated with Black male rap stars, the choreography explores the distance between African and Afro-American male identities. blackmilk inserts a performative dimension into the cultural representation of Black masculinity, opening it up to a different complexity and sensitivity.
