Projectinfo

One of my postcolonial projects that had already done was an issue related to European demand for spices. The basic reason why 350 years ago Dutch or VOC occupied Indonesia were spices and herbs market in Europe. Indonesia was and stills the second largest global producer of nutmeg, mace, cardamoms, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, and pepper.

As Indonesia is the second largest producer of spices and herbs, there were also a colonial history that it were produced as traditional organic medicine, in Indonesia call "Jamu" or formerly "Djamu". These herbal medicines had been used the ancient time up to now, people of different level in the villages and the big cities largely consume it.

At the present one could buy easily ready made packed modernly in the form of powder, pills, capsule, drinking liquid and ointments. There are various kinds of jamu to combat different kind of illness and disease. In principle there are two types of jamu, the first is jamu to maintain physical fitness and health and the second is jamu to cure various kind of illness, and there are also special jamu created with purpose to maintain a happy loving couple or family.

From above, I want to create a Modern Young Jamu Art Shop and a Performance Act during the opening, which offering or sell prepare jamu on spot and products, so public can taste the bitter and the sweet of Jamu and also can buy products which the images that will used on it were related to Indonesian Colonial History. The product will be like daily stuff; scarves, gloves, boxers, headbands, shirts, sunglasses, hat, and etc. mix with photography or painting or object as whole body of work.
