Projectinfo

I'll be working with Monochrom on a comic/graphic novelette for the Sierra Zulu project, which I've already created a sample cover for: <link http: www.sierra-zulu.com sierra-zulu-the-graphic-novelette>www.sierra-zulu.com/2012/04/25/sierra-zulu-the-graphic-novelette/. I've been invited to help with graphics and design on the fifteen anniversary roboexotica poster (<link http: www.roboexotica.org _blank external-link-new-window externen link in neuem>www.roboexotica.org) as well as working on a robot for roboexotica. I'll be helping to design and paint the robot as well as work on textures for the minecraft modification that it will run off of. The idea is to create a mod where game players can put different ingredients into a container while in the game, and the robot will pour them a physical drink depending on their ingredients in game. I'll be working on the Sierra Zulu comic, the Roboexotica poster, and the Roboexotica robot during my artist residency, and my hope is that you'll enjoy having me as a guest as much as I'll enjoy being there.

Documentation

My name is James Brothwell and I was fortunate enough to be one of the artists in residence for Museumsquartier in December 2013. During my time there, I worked on a poster for the 15th anniversary of the Roboexotica event (<link http: www.roboexotica.org>www.roboexotica.org), which took place from December 5th thru the 8th. The event is an international one in which makers create robots that mix and pour cocktail drinks. Aside from the poster, I was also involved in creating the minecraft cocktailbot, which allows people to choose from blocks inside of the minecraft video game, and then have a cocktail mixed according to the blocks they’ve harvested and chosen to sacrifice to the drink gods. You can see a video of the bot in action here: <link http: versepublications.com _blank external-link-new-window externen link in neuem>versepublications.com

After Roboexotica, I worked on a full size digital painting in the style of Boris Vallejo, which is to say a very cheesy 80’s style, which would become a prop for monochrom’s TV Movie, Die Gstettensaga: The Rise of Echsenfriedl. The painting measured in at 3.3ft x 2.3ft and was done in a very short, rushed week in order to get it ready in time for one of the earlier shots that it was to be a prop for.

After finishing the painting, I played a very minor role in the movie itself before going on to start illustrating the opening sequence. My background in working on comics was very useful at this point, because we ended up with 23 pages of sequential art in a loose, sketchy style to open the movie with. They were done in a flipbook style with narration over top in the movie itself.

After all of that, I got to relax a bit and enjoy some of Vienna’s wonderful architecture, coffee shops, punsch stands, and holiday markets. New Year’s eve in Museumsquartier was quite the experience, to say the least.
