Documentation

I conducted a one month artist residency (August, 2012) at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, Austria to focus on research for the TECHNOSENSUAL event + exhibition. My research while at MQ involved writing about the TECHNOSENSUAL exhibition—which explores fashion, technology and the body—as well as organizing and moderating an end-symposium featuring many of the participants.

TECHNOSENSUAL Interviews:
While in residence I conducted a series of interviews with the artists participating in TECHNOSENSUAL who had developed new works for the exhibition, or were in the process of developing new works to showcase at the end-symposium. The interviews were published on the Fashioning Tech Blog [ http://www.fashioningtech.com/ ], a leading source in wearables and tech-focused fashion. Reviews with the following artists were published: Ricardo O’Nascimento (August 20, 2012); Meg Grant + Anja Hertenberger (August 21, 2012); Studio Roosegaarde (August 23, 2012); Lucy McRae (August 24, 2012); Pauline van Dongen (August 28, 2012); Melissa Coleman (September 7, 2012); Local Androids (September 12, 2012); Ying Gao (September 18, 2012); Kobakant (September 24, 2012); Maartje Dijkstra (October 3, 2012); and Anouk Wipprecht (November 6, 2012).

TECHNOSENSUAL Catalogue:
While in residence, with intimate access to the works in the exhibition, I wrote a short catalogue essay contextualizing the works within the field of fashiontech research. This essay is forthcoming in the TECHNOSENSUAL catalogue to be published in November, 2012.

TECHNOSENSUAL End-Symposium:
I organized and moderated the end-symposium, a major international discussion event bringing together artists from the TECHNOSENSUAL exhibition as well as researchers in the field of wearable technologies and fashiontech. The symposium took place on August 29, 2012 from 7pm to 9pm and was attended by over 200 people.

My Introduction to the End-Symposium:
“That we are standing here surrounded by such visionary works as those presented within the framework of the TECHNOSENSUAL ‘where fashion meets technology’ exhibition is a testimony to the growing importance of fashion and technology.

As an emergent field—combining fashion design, engineering, textile and material innovation, computer science, as wells as industrial design—it takes a unique set of individuals to engage in these hybrid practices. Daring, and innovative does not begin to summarize some of the qualities needed to work at the cusp of experimental practices as those linked to fashiontech. These avant-garde and avant-tech designers also require tenacity to forge paths in uncharted territories, as well as an openness to their aesthetic, material, and technological paradigms shaken.

This evening we have the pleasure of bringing together some of these fashion and technology explorers. It is an opportunity to heard, learn, and question first hand their contributions to the field, and to guide us in the minutia of their labour-intensive research. I could not be more pleased to be the one to both congratulate Anouk Wipprecht, the curator of this exhibition, and the artists and designers involved in raising the bar, so the speak, for fashion and technology!”

Participating in TECHNOSENSUAL and living at the MQ for the month-long residency was an a delightful and creatively stimulating experience!
