25 Years MQ

The anniversary film by Susi Jirkuff takes us on a brief journey through time, back to when 600 horses were still housed in the imperial stables at the MQ, and shows how it has developed into one of the liveliest and most successful art and culture districts.

For 25 years – a quarter of a century – the MuseumsQuartier Wien has been one of Europe's most influential cultural areas, where art, culture and life merge in a unique way. Under the motto ‘Generation MQ’, the anniversary year 2026 will focus on the people who have shaped the MQ since its opening in 2001 and those who are bringing it to life today with new perspectives.

MQ x WIKIPEDIA

Wikipedia went online on 15 January 2001, based on the conviction that knowledge should be freely accessible.
Twenty-five years later, it has become the world's largest knowledge platform, continuously renewing itself and at the same time making social developments visible. Wikipedia shares these values with the MuseumsQuartier, which in recent decades has developed from imperial stables into one of the most vibrant art and culture areas in the world.

The MuseumsQuartier warmly congratulates Wikipedia on its 25th anniversary and is giving away 25 freely usable images that showcase the development, transformation and unmistakable spirit of the cultural area over the past 25 years.

Greetings by Claudia Garád, Managing Director of Wikimedia Austria

"Jimmy Wales, one of the founders of Wikipedia, once compared our encyclopaedia to a public park or a temple of the mind, a place where we can all reflect, learn and share our knowledge with others. The MuseumsQuartier Wien is just such a place, except that it can actually be experienced physically. Here, tangible openness is combined with depth in a congenial way: openness as a lively interconnection with the city and its people, and depth as an invitation to immerse oneself in the diversity of culture and knowledge. We are a little proud that we can celebrate 25 years of Wikipedia this year – and the fact that we feel a similar pride in 25 years of the MuseumsQuartier Wien is probably a sign that both institutions are fulfilling their mission. Just as Wikipedia is meant to belong to everyone, a visit to the MuseumsQuartier Wien also gives you the feeling that this place is your own."

As modern seating, the MQ courtyard furniture in the courtyards of the MuseumsQuartier invites visitors to linger and relax, contributing significantly to the MQ living space. The courtyard furniture, better known as Enzis, has made the MuseumsQuartier one of the most popular meeting places for Viennese and international visitors alike. In its anniversary year, two new colours are being introduced for the first time. The new shades "Punschkrapferlrosa" (cookie pink) and "Sodazitrongelb" (soda lemon yellow) bring a charming, sugary accent to the MQ.

Many more exciting events, exhibitions and shared moments will follow throughout the year.
