Olivia Mihălţianu studied visual arts at the University of Arts Bucharest and she currently lives and works in Bucharest. Her artistic approach is related to cross-media and process-oriented projects involving video, film, photography, object-making, installation and performance. Usually long-term projects, the works follow various visual aspects related to personal identity and social life in different cultures, political and economic situations, in a global and local context, by questioning topics such as: the role played by the artist in today’s society, archetypal human patterns, re-contextualization, alienation. Working with specific locations, from urban fabric to deserted beaches and from mountain tops to isolated islands, filtering everything through iconic images inspired by cinema, video-art and photography, by using historic cameras and cutting-edge technologies, is an attempt to move freely through time, personal perceptions and social expectations.

Projektinfo

During my time residence in Vienna I am planning to continue my research on the concept of Grafting and Splicing that is, film and plant manipulation - seen from a speculative perspective as similar techniques of content maneuvering - a continuation of previous concerns and ideas pushed forward in a new context which can expand and reveal new meanings and knowledge.
The research is looking into the Deleuzean theory that science and art, along philosophy are equally and essentially creative and practical, they are different ways of organizing the metaphysical flux. In the same time Deleuze does not treat cinema as an art representing an external reality, but as an ontological practice that creates different ways of organizing movement and time.

Dokumentation

During my one-month residency at the Q21/MQ I had the opportunity to further develop my research concept on Grafting and Splicing, which looks at the similarities and common ground between plants and film and photography. It fallows links created by plant grafting, evolution of species, end of the line species, mutations and genetic modification vs diverse film and photographic techniques, endless possibilities of editing and new content.

I had the opportunity to trace some of all this different working paths at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, ERSTE Stiftung Bibliothek or the Botanischer Garten der Universität Wien.

The residency was also a very good opportunity to reconnect with the Viennese art scene, by meeting artists, curators and visiting galleries, artist-run spaces and studios.

This research time allowed me to later add new ideas and develop new works that were presented in exhibitions such as:
Enquiry into Plants, Tranzit.ro/Bucharest, 2019, the work Natura non facit saltus / Natura facit saltus; the project Direct Exposure and Direct Exposure - Herbarium at Sense of a City, the fridge, Bulgarian Fund for Women, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, 2019 and at WeTransfer: Art and Politics in the Appropriate Hands, Timisoara, 2019; the solo show Cette histoire n’est pas fantastique at Anca Poterasu Gallery, Bucharest, Romania, 2019, also presented at Curiosa, Paris Photo, 2019.
