Yane Calovski

The artistic practice of Yane Calovski (Skopje, Macedonia, 1973) is concerned with experiential ideas often situated in the site-specificity of a new cultural and political geography. Calovski is interested in reactivating, rather then fictionalizing, existing inconclusive modernist narratives that may, as active memories, become “reactive” imagination, or rather, evocations that generate imagination. His works emerge from his evolving experience within disparate international contexts and are often situated in the public domain. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Interlocutor’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art (2011, Skopje), ‘Obsessive Setting’ at Zak Branicka Gallery (2010, Berlin), ‘Ponder Pause Process (a Situation) at the Tate Britain (2010, London), “Hollow Land/ Master Plan” at The European Kunshlalle (2009, Cologne). Recent group exhibitions include 2nd Project Biennial D-0 ARK Underground, (2013, Konjic, Bosnia and Herzegovina), European Kunsthalle in the KUB Arena, Kunsthalle Bregenz, (2013), and Occupied. ORTung 2012, Salzburger Kunstverein (2013). He exhibited as part of Manifesta 3 (Ljubljana, 2000), PR ’04 ‘tribute to the messenger’ – m&m proyectos, Puerto Rico, 2004), and Manifesta 7 (“The Rest of Now”, Bolzano, 2008). For his practice, he has been awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts (2001), among other awards, grants and fellowships. Calovski has studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1992-96), Bennington College (1996-97), and also been part of post graduate studio programs at the CCA Kitakyushu (1999/00), and the Jan van Eyck Academie (2002-04). He has lectured and published his work internationally. In 2004, together with artist Hristina Ivanoska, he co-founded "press to exit project space”, a research platform for artistic and curatorial practices based in Skopje. His work is in the collection of Van Abbemuseum, Deutsche Bank Collection, Zorlu Centar Art Collection, Art Collection Telekom Berlin, Macedonian National Gallery, Philadelphia Museum of Art and other. In November 2012 the Zorlu Center Art Collection, Istanbul, published OBJE’CT, a first comprehensive publication dedicated to Calovski work, edited by Basak Senova, Calovski is represented by Zak Branicka in Berlin.
