Gabriel Grippo a.k.a. GGrippo is an Argentine-born New York-based artist, designer and cultural activist.
Educated in the fine arts and architecture in Argentina and trained in the fashion design industry in the US, he has been working in design, photography and art installation since 1985. He lives and works in Brooklyn.
In the years following the military government in Buenos Aires he was part of an up-coming movement that changed the local art scene. He lived and worked in Buenos Aires until 1991 when he moved to Europe and lived and worked in London throughout that year and traveled to Amsterdam and Paris for inspiration.
After being back in Buenos Aires to start a project called ITS (I Think South) he moved to New York in 1993 to first work as a corporate designer and eventually in 1997 started his own design label "trash-à-porter", an eco-friendly clothing line.
He has conceived and produced several art and design events and permanent installations such as: SuPuesto de Moda (BA1990), Grandstore (NYC1996), Fashionlab (NYC1998,1999,2000.BA2005), Firstop: Williamsburg Design (NYC2002,2003,2004,2006) and Bauplatz (NYC2005); some of them in collaboration with important museums and art organizations (Eyebeam Atelier, Museum of Art and Technology, Downtown Arts Projects, DUMBO Arts Center, Williamsburg Art and Historical Center). He has worked and collaborated with artists and designers such as LOT/EK Architecture, Jakob and McFarlane, Art Point M, Freitag, Fabrics_Interseason, Organic Grooves, Soundlab, Claudia Hill, Xuly Bet, Susan Cianciolo, Klaus Rosburg, Lwin Design, Cecilia Biagini, Florinda Schnitzel, Ideenreich, Jocko Weyland, Katalin Deer, Richard Etkin, Dahlia Fischbein and Tite Barbuzza among others.
He created the label "trash-à-porter" in 1995 for his first NYC show at White Columns Gallery, the exhibition idea later evolved into a full-scale design concept that now includes the clothing line for women, men and children and home accessories.
His architecture and furniture design collaborations with architects Werner Morath and Maria Montenegro completed in NYC and BA have been featured in numerous industry-related publications (Architectural Digest, (718) Brooklyn New Style, Experimental Eco Design, New York Times, Gap Press/New York Ateliers, Azure, Elle Deco, Living, La Nacion Arquitectura, Metropolis Magazine, Man, New York Times).
