The text ‘Wildes Wunderland – All you Need is… Trust’ explores a lesser-known approach to nature conservation: rewilding. It tells of the return of the wilderness wherever we understand landscapes as complex, dynamic systems and trust that nature can be left to its own devices. With every species that returns, the stunted image of nature becomes more colourful. This trust fosters an inner attitude of waiting and observing, and enables the return of something wild and untamed that has always been there, in one form or another. Like ancient patterns, paths criss-cross the overgrown landscape; every hoofprint becomes a home, a whole world for water beetles, snails and tiny flies, whilst on the layer below, earthworms rejuvenate the soil. Unloved land becomes a refuge, a place full of hope.
The text focuses on two European rewilding projects as examples, which illustrate what is possible when we give nature the space it needs to regenerate under its own steam.
