Privacy Policy
Scope
This Privacy Policy applies to the website of the MuseumsQuartier Wien, which is accessible via the domain name www.mqw.at and its various subdomains (hereinafter referred to as “our website”).
Person in charge
The controller responsible for the collection, processing, and use of personal data within the meaning of Article 4(7) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (hereinafter referred to as the “GDPR”) is MuseumsQuartier Wien, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna, email: datenschutz@mqw.at (hereinafter referred to as “MuseumsQuartier Wien” or “we”).
Information Regarding the Collection of Personal Data
(1) Personal data is information that can be used to identify personal or factual details about you (e.g., name, address, phone number, email address). Information that we cannot link to you (or can only do so with disproportionate effort), e.g., through anonymization of the information, is not personal data. You can use most of our website without providing personal data.
(2) If you contact us via email, an online contact form, or by phone, we will store the information you provide (e.g., your email address, and, if applicable, your name and phone number) in order to process your request or answer your questions. We will delete the data collected in this process as soon as further storage is no longer necessary, or restrict its processing if statutory retention obligations apply. This also applies to reservations for guided tours of our museum submitted in writing or by phone.
(3) If we work with external service providers for specific features of our website or wish to use your data for marketing purposes, we will provide detailed information below regarding the relevant processes. We will also specify the criteria for the retention period.
Automatic Collection of Personal Data
(1) When you use the website for informational purposes only—that is, if you do not register or otherwise provide us with information—we automatically collect only the personal data that your browser transmits to our server. This includes the following data, which is technically necessary for us to display our website to you and to ensure its stability and security (the legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR):
- IP address
- Date and time of the request
- Time zone difference from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
- Content of the request (specific page)
- Access Status/HTTP Status Code
- amount of data transferred in each instance
- Website from which the request originates
- Browser
- Operating system and its user interface
- Language and version of the browser software
(2) In addition to the data mentioned above, cookies are stored on your computer when you use our website. These are small text files that are stored on your hard drive and associated with the browser you are using, and through which certain information is transmitted to the entity that sets the cookie (in this case, us). Cookies cannot execute programs or transfer viruses to your computer. They serve to make the website more user-friendly and effective overall.
(3) Use of cookies:
From MQ:
There are three categories of cookies:
- Cookies that are strictly necessary to ensure the basic functionality of the website
- Functional cookies to ensure the website's performance
- Targeted cookies to improve the user experience
From the Städel Museum:
a) This website uses the following types of cookies, the scope and functionality of which are explained below:
- Transient cookies (see b)
- Persistent cookies (see c)
b) Transient cookies are automatically deleted when you close your browser. These include, in particular, session cookies. These cookies store a so-called session ID, which allows various requests from your browser to be associated with the same session. This enables your computer to be recognized when you return to our website. Session cookies are deleted when you log out or close your browser.
c) Persistent cookies are automatically deleted after a specified period of time, which may vary depending on the cookie. You can delete these cookies at any time in your browser’s security settings.
d) If you wish to prevent cookies from being set, you can adjust the settings in your web browser. You can also delete cookies that are already stored on your computer at any time. The procedure for doing so varies by browser; please refer to your browser’s help section (under “Help” in the browser menu). Please note that you may not be able to use all features of this website.
(4) Use of tracking:
This website uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google Inc. (hereinafter “Google”), to improve and optimize the website. Google Analytics uses cookies to analyze how users interact with our website. The IP address transmitted by a user’s browser as part of Google Analytics is not combined with other data held by Google. You can prevent Google from collecting the data generated by the cookie and related to your use of the website, as well as from processing this data, by downloading and installing the browser plugin available at the following link: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout?hl=de
(5) Google’s remarketing or “similar audiences” feature
This website uses Google's remarketing or "similar audiences" feature. This feature allows the provider to target website visitors with ads by displaying personalized, interest-based ads to visitors of the provider's website when they visit other websites in the Google Display Network. Google uses cookies to analyze website usage, which forms the basis for creating interest-based advertisements. To do this, Google stores a small file containing a sequence of numbers in the browsers of website visitors. This number is used to track visits to the website and collect anonymized data about website usage. No personal data of website visitors is stored. When you subsequently visit another website in the Google Display Network, you will see ads that are highly likely to reflect the product and information sections you previously viewed. You can permanently disable the use of cookies by Google by following the link below and downloading and installing the plug-in provided there: https://www.google.com/settings/ads/plugin. Alternatively, you can disable the use of cookies by third-party providers by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative’s opt-out page at http://www.networkadvertising.org/choices/ and following the instructions provided there to opt out. Further information on Google Remarketing and Google’s privacy policy can be found at: http://www.google.com/privacy/ads/
(6) Social media cookies
Social media plugins are integrated into the website to allow users to recommend and share articles on social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter. We use a two-step process for this. Data is not transferred to third parties until users click on one of the icons displayed in the social media bar. The website operator has neither influence over nor access to cookies set by Facebook, Twitter, etc.
(7) Functional limitations without cookies
Please note that if you do not allow us to use cookies, certain features and pages may not function as expected.
Newsletter
(1) With your consent, you can subscribe to our newsletters (MQ, Children and Families, MQ Summer Stage), through which we will keep you informed about our current events and news.
(2) By subscribing to any of the newsletters offered, you, as a user, agree that your first and last name as well as your email address may be processed by MuseumsQuartier E+B GesmbH (Museumsplatz 1, A-1070 Vienna) in order to send you the respective newsletter. We use the personal data provided to us exclusively for the purposes covered by your consent.
(3) We use the so-called double opt-in procedure for newsletter subscriptions. This means that after you subscribe, we will send an email to the email address you provided, asking you to confirm that you wish to receive the newsletter. The purpose of this procedure is to verify that you subscribed to the newsletter and, if necessary, to investigate any potential misuse of your personal data.
(4) You have the right to withdraw your consent to the use of your personal data at any time by sending an email to datenschutz@mqw.at. Alternatively, you can click the “Unsubscribe” link included in every newsletter. The withdrawal of your consent takes effect for the future and does not affect the lawfulness of the processing of personal data carried out prior to the withdrawal.
(5) If your contact information changes, please notify us accordingly.
Use of social media plugins and other tools
This website contains small add-ons (plugins) from the social networks and services listed below, which are operated by third parties and allow files to be transmitted to the respective social network by clicking a button—for example, to rate, recommend, or share content with other users. We do this to pursue the purpose and legitimate interest of promoting our offerings. We configure these plugins so that data is only transmitted when you click the button. The respective provider is responsible for processing the transmitted data in compliance with data protection regulations.
a) Facebook Social Plugins
Based on our legitimate interests (i.e., our interest in the analysis, optimization, and economic operation of our online offering within the meaning of Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR), we use social plugins (“plugins”) from the social network facebook.com, which is operated by Facebook Ireland Ltd., 4 Grand Canal Square, Grand Canal Harbour, Dublin 2, Ireland (“Facebook”). The plugins may display interactive elements or content (e.g., videos, graphics, or text posts) and are recognizable by one of the Facebook logos (a white “f” on a blue tile, the terms “Like,” “Gefällt mir,” or a “thumbs-up” icon) or are labeled with the addition “Facebook Social Plugin.” When you use the services, the platform establishes a direct connection to Facebook’s servers. The content of the plugin is transmitted directly from Facebook to the platform and integrated into the website by the platform. Through the integration of the plugins, Facebook receives the information that you have accessed the platform. If you are logged into Facebook, Facebook can associate the visit with your Facebook account. If you interact with the plugins, for example by clicking the “Like” button or posting a comment, the corresponding information is transmitted directly to Facebook and stored there. The purpose and scope of data collection, as well as the further processing and use of the data by Facebook, along with your rights in this regard and privacy settings, can be found in Facebook’s privacy policy.
b) X? Do we still use this on the website?

Instagram’s Privacy Policy: http://instagram.com/about/legal/privacy/.
e) Google Maps
This website uses the Google Maps API to display maps and create directions. Google Maps is operated by Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA. When you use the platform, it establishes a direct connection to Google’s servers. Google thereby receives device-specific data, location data, IP address (log files), and information about cookies. By using the platform, the user consents to the transmission, collection, processing, and use of the automatically collected data by Google. For more information about data processing by Google, please refer to the Google Privacy Policy. There, you can also change your personal privacy settings in the Privacy Center.
Ticketing provider
Do we have a ticket provider? Jetticket? Should we list them here?
Here’s how the Städel Museum does it:
We use the booking system provided by bookingkit GmbH, Sonnenallee 233, 12059 Berlin, for online ticket bookings on our website. By making a booking on our site, you consent to the storage and processing of your personal data by bookingkit.
You can read bookingkit's privacy policy here.
