The Mirror of Peace

With “The Mirror of Peace” by Renee van Bavel, the MuseumsQuartier Wien is sending an important message of peace in times of war and conflict. The mirror installation in the MQ’s main courtyard does not explore peace in the abstract, but rather allows visitors to experience it personally. Building on “The Mirror of Peace,” the panel discussion addresses this pressing issue of our time. Artist Renee van Bavel offers insights into the project’s development and her artistic process. Corinna Otto, director of the Draiflessen Collection in Mettingen, discusses the importance of partnerships between institutions and artists in addressing social issues. Since the first presentation of “The Mirror of Peace” during the 59th Venice Biennale, the Draiflessen Collection and the artist have been closely connected. Activists Ishraga Mustafa Hamid and Petar Rosandić will share stories from their journey to the EU’s external borders and discuss the importance of peace for the people with whom they engage in dialogue through their daily work. The evening will be framed by the Kurdish-Canadian pianist, composer, and multidisciplinary sound artist Kasho Chualan, who will respond musically to the mirror installation. The discussion with the panelists will be moderated by Astrid Peterle, chief curator of the MuseumsQuartier, and Michael Podgorac, co-curator of the “Initiative Erinnern in Zukunft” at the Brunnenpassage.
