Vortices
Sabine Jelinek
Wave-like moving image sequences wind their way through the circular illuminated displays of the Sternenpassage and, beneath the barrel vault, enter into a dialogue with the Baroque architecture of the space.
The series *Vortices*, which has been in development since 2017, is based on photographic self-portraits that are transformed into fragile visual forms through precise incisions, displacements and material interventions. Structures emerge from the smooth photographic surface that are reminiscent of currents, wave movements or magnetic fields, revealing identity as something fluid, fragile and process-oriented. In this way, a tension unfolds between scientific order and subjective experience, between cosmological models and physical traces.
To mark the opening, Lumen Zine, No. 16, is being published: a 24-page publication featuring a German-English artist’s statement by the artist, a short essay by the scholar Christian Köberl, who has been involved with the series from the outset, and works from the Vortices series, which has been in progress since 2017 and can be seen at the Sternenpassage until the end of March 2026. Issue No. 16 is also the final instalment in the Lumen Zine series, published by Schlebrügge.Editor (Vienna). It will be available free of charge on the opening night and thereafter, until the end of the exhibition, from the vending machine in the passage.
