Ju Aichinger: Ceramics as Fossils | Preserving Today for Tomorrow
Artist Workshop
In this workshop, artist Ju Aichinger invites participants to explore ceramics as a medium of memory, fossilisation and care. The focus is on discussing artistic processes and methods, as well as practical work with clay as a medium for capturing time and touch.
How can the present be materialised? What traces do we leave behind – and what remains?
Based on a concept that thinks of ceramics as fossils, everyday objects and personal references are gathered and ‘petrified’ through firing and glazing in order to preserve them for a possible future. Instead of digging up the past, the workshop creates its own relics: objects that are somewhere between sculpture, installation and utility.We intuitively venture into slab construction and discover how simple patterns can be used to create ceramic objects.
Ju Aichinger lives and works in Vienna. As a visual artist, their practice encompasses installation, painting and costume design, with a focus on the sculptural use of ceramics. Situated between the familiar and abstraction, their work draws on references from queer subculture, pop culture and fragments of everyday life. They explore material and immaterial remnants of social trends, which they archive, transform and recontextualise. Their focus is on questions of identity, social narratives and the relationship between the individual and the collective.
In addition to their independent artistic practice, Ju Aichinger designs stage sets, visuals and costumes, including ‘hold yr ache 2 my ache’ (TQW, 2024). Their most recent work, ‘to be or not to be (butch)’, was shown at Parallel Vienna 2025, for which they received the Bildrecht YOUNG ARTIST Award 2025 | RUNNER UP. The installation is currently on display at the Queer Museum Vienna.
