Dan Pinchbeck

Creative Director The Chinese Room, Brighton

In 2012 The Chinese Room released “Dear Esther” and accidentally created a sub-genre of gaming, the FPX, or First Person Explorer. Since then, Dan Pinchbeck and his team created a cult FPX horror, “Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs”, and the recently released “Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture”, an open-world, nonlinear FPX drama about the apocalypse.

In this talk, the creative director speaks about his approach to game design and writing, how he interprets ideas of agency, interactivy, mechanics and player experience, and how this formed the bedrock to “Rapture”‘s design and development.
