Projektinfo

The Tulpamancer
A tulpa is an entity created in the mind, acting independently of and parallel to one’s own consciousness. A tulpa is able to think independently of its creator, and it has its own dreams, desires and emotions. Essentially a tulpa is a sentient being that exists in the mind of a person. Tulpamancers are people who actively create tulpas and cultivate relationships with them. There is an active online community of tulpamancers, for instance at Tulpas subreddit, or tulpa.info, from where the above definition was paraphrased. The Tulpamancer is a story about a young woman who creates five tulpas and sends them to continue their lives online, where they can express all of her inner turmoil somewhere outside of her body.

The project has two modules. The first module is a stereoscopic 3D video, in square format, where an invisible narrator introduces us to five different fantastic creatures, these images of the characters shift and change constantly into images of water. They appear sometimes almost as ghosts underneath the surface. Up close, it sometimes seems as if the surfaces of their bodies are liquid. The second module is a web publication and performance involving the intersection of five Instagram profiles. Each tulpa has its own profile which is updated daily over a two months. When exploring these pages, the viewer finds the creatures have voices: they have been publishing about their lives interacting with one another. Some of the characters, for instance Diane, who is a troll, are extremely unpleasant and seem intent on exterminating the optimism of the other characters. Others, such as Visola, who is a white witch nurse, are aggressively positive. Some are passive, some are active, but they all publish relentlessly. Their conversations, taking place in the comments section of each post, seem to swirl around in circles like turbulence.

The film links to the comic via QR codes which occasionally appear on screen, fading in and out of the 3D imagery. Upon reading with a device, these codes lead the viewer to one of the five different instagram profiles.

Meanwhile, in the film, the narrator confesses that she created the creatures and gave them life in order to externalize the conflicting sides of her personality. These characters are in constant struggle against one another due to the narrator’s own ambivalent feelings about her real world existence.
