SMILING SUN
The idea for the experimental video project "Smiling Sun" I had during my last residency in New York, where I made research about a historical cruiser ship, who changed during her life several owners, continents and names and in 1999 ended in an accident under the seas of Indonesia.

The ship as a symbol of migration, dislocation and heterotopian “place without place” appears very often in my previous work. Here the topic is a bit shifted and raises also the question if the tourism, with the high production of sweet illusions, mostly by the economic migrants from the “third world”) is really the last utopia of today, as Boris Greuys said. And what if this "utopia" ends as a wrack under the sea, from where the sun – the former sculptural emblem of the cruiser ship -  is smiling to us.

During the Q21-residency in Vienna I will  make further research on this topic, searching for new visual found footage in combination with video footage I made previously in the USA and experiment with the  structure and visual language for the new video/video-installation work.
