Through object-making and site-specific installations, Anton Burdakov’s work explores transitions between spaces and states, focusing on the spatial dimensions of personal relationships and goals. Emphasizing the experience of time flow, his projects consider how physical environments affect people and structure human interactions, and the process of place-making as an expression of desire and agency.

Born in 1982 in Kiev, Burdakov grew up in Ukraine and England. He studied neuroscience at the University of Cambridge and sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London. Since 2008 he has been based in Berlin and London.

Burdakov has exhibited internationally with solo projects including Assembly, Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2015), Soil Map, Eden Project, UK (2015), Tiger Tiger, Bosse&Baum, London (2013), KOMPLEX IV, Gut Siggen, Germany (2012) and Built on Promises, Program, Berlin (2010). Selected group exhibitions include Young Shoots, Bristol Create Centre, touring to Kew Gardens, Hauser & Wirth Somerset and other venues (2015), Festival of Future Nows, Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2014), 21st century Art and Design, Christie's, London (2013), Accidental Festival, Roundhouse Theatre, London (2012) and Presence in Layers, Sophiensaele, Berlin (2011).

In 2013 Burdakov curated a group exhibition Must-Have at global headquarters of furniture brand Ligne Roset in London, and in 2011 was co-curator of exhibition and symposium promoting dialogue between art and neuroscience, Seeing with Eyes Closed,  Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice.

Burdakov has given talks and led workshops at many universities and cultural venues, including Architectural Association in London, Berlin University of the Arts, BMW Guggenheim Lab in Berlin and Bern University of Arts.

Projektinfo

As part of my stay I will contribute to the exhibition "LEVITATE" at freiraum Q21 INTERNATIONAL. The theme is close to my practice, which frequently deals with human efforts to escape the confines of matter and mortality though individual effort of 'building': determining the course of one's life, creating architecture, and so fourth – trying, like Baron Munchausen, to 'lift itself up by the hair' out of the human condition. In addition I plan to work on a series of experiments developing a format of 'space-object', an attempt to use fully architectural language on a smaller scale. Through such hybrid objects I hope to be able to capture or allude to human narratives as they unfold in space. Finally, the context and time frame of the residency would allow me to probe further into ways of connecting my practice to broader networks, working with elements such as 'team', 'project' and 'place' and basic building blocks of durational events.
