Nachbarinnen Handbags
Edition Paul Albert Leitner
The bags produced in the NACHBARINNEN sewing workshop in Vienna embody local and sustainable production with social benefits.
The products were upcycled from tarpaulins used in the ‘MuseumsQuartier X Paul Albert Leitner’ campaign, in collaboration with the NACHBARINNEN association. The project funds tutoring sessions for children and support for families. It also helps people find jobs, thereby promoting self-determination and economic independence.
The images are taken from the MQ’s 2024/25 campaign, for which the MuseumsQuartier Wien invited renowned Austrian photographers to take photographs of visitors at the MuseumsQuartier. One of these photographers was Paul Albert Leitner, whose distinctive artistic style features staged self-portraits in a bespoke ‘travel suit’. For the MQ, he captured strolling visitors in an observational style, as well as the unique contrast between the Baroque and modern architecture of the site.
The upcycled textiles are currently available at MQ Point.
NACHBARINNEN is a charitable organisation whose aim is to promote social cohesion in the city by supporting immigrant families and those facing disadvantage here. Trained social workers engage with their compatriots who live in isolation on an equal footing and help the families they support to develop methods and strategies for a lasting improvement in their living conditions.
Paul Albert Leitner (born 1957 in Jenbach, Tyrol) is an Austrian photographer and artist who has been living and working as a freelance artist in Vienna since 1986. His photographic practice is characterised by an intense exploration of travel, self-representation and the connection between art and life.
