The Zew is the artistic project of Vienna-based musician Leonie Schlager, who is known within the Austrian music scene for her distinctive and atmospheric sonic language. Her music moves between folk, experimental pop, and electronic elements. She describes her own style as “Cyborg Folk“: organic songwriting and storytelling combined with manipulated sounds, effects, and an often otherworldly atmosphere.

A defining element of the live performances is the visual design: painted eyes on the face explore themes such as perception, presence, and identity. What began as a solo project has evolved into a permanent band lineup featuring Leonie Schlager (vocals, guitar), Daniela Czurda (bass, violin, vocals), and Matthias Frey (drums, violin, vocals). Depending on the concert, the lineup is expanded to include additional string players, a cellist, or a choir.

Following the solo home-recording debut “1FI1FO“, the mini album “Zazel Wants to Fly“ was released in 2024 and was already created within this band constellation.

The Zew's lyrics explore themes such as independence, vulnerability, loss of control, and human intimacy. Guitar effects, minimalist grooves, and layered vocal harmonies create a dense, ethereal soundscape.
