“Storm Protocols“ constitutes the first phase of a larger research-creation project, developed during the artist's residency at MuseumsQuartier Wien following his Jury Award at Vienna Shorts 2025 for “Mémoire entropique.“

Nicolas Brault's stop-motion practice has long sought matter on the edge of transformation — skin shedding, photographs dissolving in water, memory coming undone. In “Storm Protocols,“ that attention turns toward the atmosphere itself.

This exhibition presents a first laboratory: ordinary materials pushed beyond their ordinary behaviour, coaxed into becoming clouds, lightning, spiraling wind. Each protocol is a negotiation — between the animator's hand, the material's own physics, and the forces that exceed both.

Working image by image through phenomena too fast or too vast to be witnessed directly, Brault proposes a form of attention that is at once scientific and animist: to reconstruct the storm, gesture by gesture, is to recognize that our intentions are inscribed in a world that answers back.
