Ext.Noc.
Patrick Topitschnig
The scene is being filmed outdoors, at night. The setting is right, the lighting is set. — But what happens beyond it, where the light of the scene fades and encounters the outside world? Since 2019, Patrick Topitschnig has been working with “Light Overflow“ on numerous film sets in Austria and internationally. His photographic series tells the story of what the film camera does not want to see; his images discover those almost-dark zones that are only brushed by the light of the film set.
The exhibition at the Eikon Showroom presents selected works from this extensive series by the artist, ahead of his major publication “Nocturnal Frames – Stories that could have been“, published by VFMK – Verlag für moderne Kunst.
“For me, Ext.Noc. is an observation of the edges of the constructed film world. It is where filmmaking meets the real world. Diegetic and extradiegetic image sequences meet on the same timeline. Formally, I draw on cinematic narrative strategies and use them for my own independent photographic image-making”
