The U-Theatre, the renowned Taiwanese ensemble known for its unique fusion of Chinese drumming, Gurdjieff movement, meditation, and theater, presents its classic repertoire “L’éveil de la Montagne” at the MuseumsQuartier Wien in Hall E.

“L’éveil de la Montagne” is a poetic homage to Mount Laoquan, the long-standing home and spiritual training ground of the members of the U-Theatre. Inspired by the voices, seasons, and rhythms of the mountain, the work transforms years of disciplined practice and communal living into a refined theatrical language in which movement and stillness, sound and silence resonate in quiet harmony. Free from heavy-handed symbolism or spiritual pretension, the performance unfolds with authenticity, evoking the atmosphere of a moonlit forest and the gentle whisper of the wind in the treetops.

Featuring the xiao, the Chinese two-stringed fiddle, the sheng, the yangqin, the cello, the flute, as well as drums and gongs, the work becomes an intimate symphony in which nature and music merge as one.

After “Sound of the Ocean“ was named the best production of the 1998 Festival d’Avignon by the French press, the U-Theatre continued to perform at major international arts festivals around the globe. The U-Theatre was founded in Taipei in 1988 by Liu Rou-yu; Huang Chih-chun later joined the company, along with a group of dedicated professional artists. Since then, the U-Theatre has developed a distinctive artistic practice and a holistic philosophy of humanistic education.

Through its commitment to originality, international vision and cultural innovation, the ensemble embodies its guiding principle: “Drumming in a state of inner peace.“

For the U-Theatre, the performance is not merely an artistic outcome, but the expression of a holistic way of life rooted in the Dao.
