Drawing on his new book *38 Londres Street*, Sands discusses the arrest of the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and an unexpected link to Nazi Germany. The conversation explores the origins of modern international law, power, memory and the hope that the rule of law can triumph over arbitrariness.

MQ Talks: Extending existing buildings through innovative timber construction

Architect Markus Penell & Prof. Juri Troy in conversation with Volker Dienst
Driven by a deep passion for the potential of sustainable architecture, architect Markus Penell (O&O BAUKUNST) and Prof. Juri Troy (juri troy architects | TU Wien) introduce us to the world of adapting existing buildings. They demonstrate how the forward-looking use of timber offers not only design-based but also ecological solutions to current challenges in the construction industry: How can existing building stock be put to good use, resources conserved and, at the same time, space created for new ideas? What makes timber construction a key technology for climate-friendly building – and how can it be used to strengthen a building culture that respects existing structures and paves the way for the future?

With great curiosity and enthusiasm for human potential, transformation expert and bestselling author Maja Göpel takes us on a journey of discovery into our values and how they shape our society: where do they come from, which values do we wish to preserve and cherish, which ones can we draw upon – and which ones sometimes even stand in our way? Which values can help us to courageously shape change and stay on course in turbulent times?

MQ Talks | Episode 1: Ivan Krastev

There is a widespread sense that our era, the early 21st century, is torn between two world orders, one of which is in decline whilst the other has not yet been established or taken shape. The crisis facing Western democracies, the increasing polarisation of society, a new aristocracy of the super-rich, populist revolts against all manner of elites, and the return of political violence are symptomatic of forces that are tearing apart a world that once seemed stable. But what are these forces? What role do migration, economic globalisation, new wars and new alliances, digitalisation, smartphones and artificial intelligence play in this mix? Philipp Blom explores these questions in depth with the renowned political scientist Ivan Krastev.

MQ Goes Green | Episode 2: Without microelectronics, there can be no climate protection

What a powerful quote from Gerald Reischl, Head of Communications and Public Relations at AT&S, the world’s leading manufacturer of high-end printed circuit boards and IC substrates. AT&S is making history with the HTB3 high-tech centre of excellence, which opened in June. It is, in fact, the first and only production facility for IC substrates in the Western world. This makes the Styrian company, based in Leoben, a prime example of European semiconductor expertise. In an interview with Liane Seitz, the former journalist and media expert discusses the numerous links between sustainability and technology, reveals why he would like to see more women in the industry, and makes a striking statement (or, rather, expresses his conviction) that Europe can indeed be competitive in high-tech manufacturing. – Have a listen and look to the future with optimism!
