Bettina Leidl, executive director of the MuseumsQuartier Wien, welcomes the decision by Vice Chancellor and Minister of Culture Andreas Babler regarding the future of the House of Austrian History at the MuseumsQuartier. According to Leidl, this decision provides the necessary planning certainty for a key project in Austria’s democratic culture of remembrance.
“I wholeheartedly welcome the decision by the Minister of Culture and am grateful for the clarification that has now been provided. The House of Austrian History is a key museum project for our country’s democratic culture of remembrance, and this decision provides the MuseumQuartier with the necessary planning certainty,”
Following an international architectural competition, the project is currently in the submission phase, and a decision on the building permit is expected sometime in 2026.
“I am delighted that the MuseumsQuartier Wien—which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026 and, with over 110,000 square meters, ranks among the world’s largest cultural complexes—is being expanded to include another major cultural institution, the Haus der Geschichte Österreich,”
