Liljana Mead Martin
Key Facts
Liljana Mead Martin is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, Canada. Her practice investigates the material afterlives of ecological disturbance—working with collected soils, fire-charred wood, and botanical media to trace entangled narratives of climate, memory, and biological transformation. Spanning sculpture, speculative climate fiction, and science communications, she explores how physical residues of environmental change become conduits for rethinking human relationships with land, temporality, and ecological responsibility.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations at ENTRE (Vienna), NADA House (New York), Zalucky Contemporary (Toronto), Wil Aballe (Vancouver), and the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture (Dawson City). She is the founder and editor of BIOMASS, a web publication exploring burnout at the intersections of artistic labour and ecological awareness, and is a contributor to Nature Creative Commons, translating forest research into open-access visual media to support environmental policy in British Columbia.
Project info
During her residency at MQ, Liljana Mead Martin will explore the subterranean activity of plants and trees during winter cycles of dormancy, reflecting on ecological regeneration through new sculptures, drawings and installation. Through the creation of new work at MQ, she will be materializing speculative life-forms and discussing shifting climate futures through open studios and collaborative events.
