Call for Application open now: MQ AiR 2027
until 15 September, 2026
The MQ Artist in Residence Studio tranzit.org/ERSTE Foundation is part of the ERSTE Foundation’s long-term commitment to promoting critical contemporary art, with a particular focus on Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. Through an open call, selected artists are invited to Vienna for a two-month residency. The program centers on research and an in-depth exploration of individual artistic questions.
The partnership with the MuseumsQuartier Wien, which has been in place since 2002, is being implemented in conjunction with the cultural partnerships of the ERSTE Foundation, including the tranzit network, the Igor Zabel Association and the Kontakt Collection, in collaboration with the WHW Akademija in Zagreb. The ERSTE Foundation and its project partners jointly form the jury that selects the participants.
Thus, the residencies are aimed at artists and curators from Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovak Republic, and Slovenia working in the field of critical contemporary visual art to do research in their respective area.
Taking into consideration the urgencies raised by the ongoing war against Ukraine, we would like to express our solidarity and add a grant of a two-month stay for a participant from Ukraine.
The residency
The research character of the residency should make it possible to take a break from strenuous situations, from everyday production pressure and find time to concentrate on a specific interest. The participants are given the opportunity to live and work for two months in one of the MuseumsQuartier studios right in the heart of Vienna. The apartments offer both living and working space, but do not provide room for large-scale artistic works.
Each residency includes:
- €1,300 monthly stipend
- €300 travel grant (€500 for participants from outside the EU)
- Studio/living space at MuseumsQuartier
- Opportunities for meetings and exchange during the residency
Please note: pets are not permitted at the residency.
