Anna Meyer: Planettoo
until Sun 26.05.2024, MQ Pop-Up Schauraum

With her exhibition Planettoo, the painter Anna Meyer takes a humorous but also poignant look at mountain landscapes in Austria and simultaneously addresses global ecological and social topics. The paintings and objects presented are part of Meyer’s group of works titled Weltschmelz(Melting World), whose central motif is the alpine landscape—thus a natural space in which the climate crisis is particularly visible.
With vivid colours and masterful brushstrokes, Meyer produces expressive pictures of the mountain landscape in which the acute ecological threat and the artist’s decidedly feminist critique can first be discerned upon closer examination. In the landscapes, Anna Meyer incorporates text and image elements that comment critically on what is depicted: giants attempting to heal nature by means of an injection; huge clitorises reminiscent of brachiosaurs wandering through a world of melting glaciers; embryos taking shape in the melting water; a large naked female figure with a protective respiratory mask and a fierce gaze directing the happenings based on a rainbow-coloured score; ‘Don’t Menschen The War’ standing in large letters on busses backed up on a mountain pass.

Starting from the concentrated presentation in the MQ Pop-Up Showroom, the arrangement of paintings and objects extends out to conquer space, branching out in the form of colourful adhesive tape in the corridors of the MQ exhibition spaces, and continuing up to the main entrance of the MuseumsQuartier; these markings simultaneously also guide visitors directly to the pictures.

Two works are presented prominently in large format on a display made up of two-sided steles on the forecourt of the site - Anna Meyer’s ecofeminist gaze and perspective greets visitors to the MuseumsQuartier.

On the same evening (Opening 06.03.) there will be a midissage of Speedshow Series 1 Episode 3: Horse Power. Sculptural Audio. at Schauraum Angewandte (in collaboration with Melissa Logan, Chicks on Speed) and the eSeL ABC feat. Rudi Klein "Alphabet of Mysterious Messages" will be opened in the eSeL REZEPTION.
