In January 2017 the collectors Gertraud and Dieter Bogner gave a very special gift to mumok—approximately thirty works by the Austrian-American architect, artist, stage designer, designer, and theorist Friedrich Kiesler.

The work of Nikita Kadan (born 1982 in Kiev) centers on his artistic exploration of post-communist social and political developments, and their origins and causes in the Soviet system.

Das mumok bereitet für Frühjahr 2019 eine umfassende Einzelausstellung der in Wien lebenden Künstlerin Dorit Margreiter vor. Margreiters Interesse gilt den Verbindungen von visuellen Systemen und räumlichen Strukturen, dem Verhältnis von Gegenwart und Geschichte, sowie jenem von Realität, Repräsentation und Fiktion.

Of all the pioneering art movements of the 1960s, Op art and kinetic art seem to have been accorded the least recognition. Often they were depreciatingly seen as too spectacular and thus superficial. Wrongly so, since Op art and kinetic art sharpen our awareness of the ambiguous nature of reality.

Ornament as Promise was the premise of the Pattern and Decoration movement in the United States (1975–1985). In this exhibition, mumok presents the rich collection of works from this movement of Peter and Irene Ludwig, in the largest presentation of Pattern and Decoration in German-speaking Europe since the 1980s.

Ornament as a promise was the premise of the pattern-and-decoration movement. Committed feminist artists in the United States in the 1970s like Miriam Schapiro or Robert Kushner brought color, materials and variety of forms back into the art, integrated ornamental traditions – from Islamic to North American-Indigenous to Art Deco – opening up the view beyond the contemporary geographic and historical boundaries.

Apparently, we completely underestimate our everyday life. Who stops to think about why they do everyday routines one way and not another? Train our bodies, make love, wonder around in the city or weigh ourselves – all this follows certain rituals, techniques and patterns that shape a person and their actions.
