MQ Summer Stage / Monday Listening Club
Monday Listening Club | Alaska al Tropical
hosted by Martin Markeli
Free admission
Is the world flat after all? Alaska Al Tropical regularly travels to the farthest corners of the planet with an empty record case, returning with the “black gold“ of the past. Peruvian cumbia from the Amazon, Ethio jazz from Addis Ababa, Muslim funk from northern Benin, or Turkish psychedelic rock—phenomena of the past that consistently fused international trends and local influences into new subgenres. His focus lies in South America, West Africa, and the Middle East—collectively termed “Outernational,“ as a counter-concept to the First World’s international music market.
In addition to the wider world, he is passionate about local music history—in Innsbruck, he runs a local subculture archive and, together with friends, the association and label “Digatone,“ which is dedicated to reissuing forgotten Austrian music from the past. For years, he has organized various event series such as the “Accordia Schallplattenclub,“ “¡Exitos!“ and “Maloja Fever,“ and also plays a role in the Viennale’s evening program. Unusual sounds, wild, rebellious youths, and virtuosos on obscure instruments—the more obscure, the more interesting. Sophisticated Boom Boom!
