Impulstanz 2017: PHILIPP GEHMACHER (AT) - Die Dinge der Welt

Location: mumok

“The title is a challenge, a presumption and overtaxation,” Philipp Gehmacher acknowledges. Because “the things of the world cannot be grasped.” Moreover, they are not just objects but situations and constellations as well, creating their own realities. A confrontation takes place in two times four hours, making use of specific objects amid Martin Beck’s rumors and murmurs exhibition at mumok. The Austrian choreographer and artist Philipp Gehmacher tackles the appearances and the materiality of very special things. He attempts to locate himself, or rather, his body, in these exceedingly complicated surroundings – talking, dancing, lingering. He does so on the assumption that it can never be entirely clear which world is meant when “one” is addressed. The audience is up close to this experimental expedition, yet free to choose how long they wish to watch, bringing their own world into Gehmacher’s and Beck’s and mumok’s spaces, where all threatens to descend into the chaos of orders.
